Instagram Gets Another TikTok-style Update For endless content scrolling

Until now, the Instagram feed was finite and entirely based of the accounts of people you follow. But, with the last update, the content on your feed will never end.

Instagram has launched a new feature called ”suggested posts” that will keep showing you more content once you have seen all the posts from the people you follow. This update, which copies the work of TikTok algorithm, will keep you glued to Instagram and make it easier for you to explore content similar to the one you engage with the most.

These suggested posts will be different from the ones you see in Explore. You will be shown posts related to your interests and accounts you might like.

Although Instagram will continue displaying the message ‘You’re all caught up” once you have seen all the posts, you will have an option to continue scrolling and explore more content with ‘Suggested Posts’. In this way, your feed will never end and keep you hooked on Instagram.

“I think for us this really came from a vision a couple of years ago around people really seeing feed as a place for their interests, and with the improvement in machine learning and our ability to kind of make it easier for you to see some more of those posts that are on Instagram every day, and really bring that personalized relevance to you,” said Julian Gutman, head of product at Instagram Home told the Verge.

“So we just want to make it really easy for people to see that when they get to the end of their feed. That’s really the motivation here, make it easier for you to go deeper on your interest.”

Criticism So Far

Its hardly possible to find a positive post online on this new Instagram update, though…

The criticism, thus far, is three-fold:

  • It could lead to users spending more time on Instagram, which can negatively impact mental health.
  • A infinite scrolling feed of content is too similar to TikTok.
  • Users don’t want to see content they didn’t ask for.

Instagram’s director of product, Robby Stein, addresses concerns that suggested posts will encourage users to spend more time on the app:

“Our goal is to make it clear when you’re all caught up so you can decide how you want to best use your time.

We see people continuing to seek out more posts they’re interested in after catching up with their feeds, so we wanted to learn from that and make it easier to go a little deeper for those who choose to do so.”

If feedback so far is anything to go by, perhaps users won’t spend much additional time on the app.

The feature seems to be universally loathed. Either that or we’re only hearing from a vocal minority.

Whether you want to see suggested posts or not, they’re now rolling out to all Instagram users worldwide.
